Ten Strings and A Goat Skin entertained a crowd of recipients and their friends at a media event Friday to announce the latest P.E.I. 2014 grant recipients.
The five nominations were shared by Ten Strings and a Goat Skin, Vishten and Ashley Condon.
Ten Strings and a Goat Skin were nominated for young performer of the year and new/emerging artist of the year for their album Corbeau.
Vishten were nominated for ensemble of the year and traditional album of the year for their album Mosaïk.
Condon was nominated for new/emerging artist of the year for her album This Great Compromise.
Ontario artists Lemon Bucket Orkestra, David Francey &
Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything lead nominations this year with four nominations each.
The awards will be presented in Calgary in November.
Overall, 70 artists and groups were announced as nominees in 19 categories.
Those artists represent eight provinces and two territories in Canada.
“This year’s nominated artists are all marked by a startling enthusiasm, says Grit Laskin, president of the Canadian Folk Music Awards. “We’ve got Appalachian dulcimers, five stringed violins, punk-inspired folk, classical-inspired folk, Irish hand drums, Iraqi oud fusionists, world-renowned stepdancers and heart wrenching songwriters - all of whom are releasing and performing some of Canada’s best folk music.”
Two additional special category award recipients will be announced this October honouring this year’s Unsung Hero and Folk Music Canada’s Innovator Award. These special category awards will also be handed out on November 10, 2013 at the CFMA gala event.
