Christmas Holidays 2013 will provide some good rest and relaxation from academics as well as a bit of US travel as the boys of TSAAGS prepare for shows in Auburn, ME and Raleigh, NC.

First Stop is the Maine Folque Co-op in Auburn, ME for a 2:00 show at the Unitarian - Universalists Church with plans for a bit of a jam in the lower hall following the show.

On December 31st, The famous Raleigh Acorn, which is synonymous with Artsplosure’s’ First Night Celebration, will be lowered to ring in 2014 as part of a festival that is so much more than the countdown to midnight. One admission pass grants access to nearly 100 performance at three dozen downtown Raleigh venues throughout the day. This will be one huge party day with over 90 thousand usually attending.

Local Prince Edward Island trad-fusion group Ten Strings And A Goat Skin, who have recently emerged on the Atlantic-Canadian music scene, have recently signed distribution deals with two companies, Maritime-Acadian distributor “Distribution Plages” and international digital distributor “Believe Digital”. The partnerships have emerged in coordination with the release of the band’s highly anticipated first studio album, Corbeau, which is set to hit stores in early June.

“It’s a big step, and I think we’re all a little anxious and excited to see what kinds of things come out of [the partnership].” says Rowen Gallant, violin player for the band. “We have high hopes, and cant wait to begin work with the two companies!”. Those people looking to purchase a copy of the album can find them being sold in select stores across Maritime Canada and Eastern Quebec, including Back Alley music in Charlottetown.

With the launch of the new album, Ten Strings And A Goat Skin will be hosting two on island launch dates. The first takes place on May 31st at the Bayou lounge at the Carrefour de L’Isle St.Jean and goes from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, while the second will take place at the Old Triangle Alehouse in Charlottetown on June 1st from 8:00pm to 12:00am. Special guest artist and Corbeau’s own producer, Lennie Gallant, will make an appearance at both shows, as will other currently undisclosed local artists.

In addition to the arrival of the new album and the exciting distribution partnerships, the band is excited to announce that their summer sees them reaching out extensively into the other Maritime provinces. Having recently singed on with Nova-Scotia based Limelight Entertainment Group as well as having been chosen to attend this year’s Contact East Conference which takes place in Newfoundland in the early fall, events seem to emphasize Ten Strings And A Goat Skin’s progression into new and exciting territory.

PEI‘s insanely good Ten Strings And A Goat Skin have been playing their instruments since they were tykes and that practice and patience has evolved into a unique take on Irish/Acadian traditional music with a distinctly modern bent. We had them play last year’s Halifax Urban Folk Festival to great response and are very much looking forward to having them launch the new album - Corbeau - at The Carleton on Thursday, June 27th. The show will get underway sometime after 9 PM and tickets are $10 + booking fee in advance or $15 at the door. We expect a few guest appearances, including uncle Lennie Gallant.

There’s nothing quite like seeing a group of young friends who’ve been playing together since they were kids, simply for the love of playing music, graduate to discovering their own style and realizing they could make a career out of it. Ten Strings And A Goat Skin are headed solidly in that direction as they prepare to release their second album - Corbeau - (the first won the Music PEI award for Roots/Traditional Album of the Year in 2012 and was nominated for an East Coast Music Award for the same thing).

This Carleton show is going to be an exuberant affair that will appeal to anyone who appreciates musicianship. The band explores its Irish and Acadian traditional styles but also does surprising re-imaginings of songs like The Who‘s Magic Bus, just to give you an idea of what’s in store should you come out to the show (and we’re hoping you do). Lennie Gallant will be making a guest appearance and the band promises other, equally cool, folks will sit in as well.

Le groupe folklore-traditionnel-fusion TEN STRINGS AND A GOAT SKIN, qui s’impose lentement mais sûrement à travers le Canada atlantique depuis maintenant deux ans, est sur le point de franchir une nouvelle étape. En effet, les trois membres de ce groupe, Jesse Périard (guitare), Caleb Gallant (bodhrán et percussions), et Rowan Gallant (violon), ont enfin terminé l’enregistrement de leur nouvel album intitulé CORBEAU.

Réalisé par Lennie Gallant, auteur-compositeur-interprète reconnu et récipiendaire de plusieurs importants prix, et enregistré au studio Sonic Temple à Halifax (NE), ce premier album studio a permis de capturer et de mettre en valeur l’éclatante énergie du groupe, établissant ainsi pour eux un nouveau jalon dans une année déjà couronnée de succès. « J’ai vraiment aimé travailler avec les gars sur ce nouvel album, CORBEAU. Ils ont une grande compréhension de la musique folklorique et traditionnelle qui dément leur jeune âge et ceci, lorsque combiné à l’énergie avec laquelle ils jouent, fait en sorte qu’on ne peut que se laisser entraîner par ces nouvelles chansons! Vous allez adorer cet album » affirme avec conviction Lennie Gallant.

Selon le guitariste Jesse Périard, le groupe est très excité par ce nouvel album bilingue : « L’expérience d’avoir travaillé avec Lennie, l’équipe du studio et le point culminant de la finalisation du projet ont été fantastiques. Nous sommes très fiers du produit final. ». L’album comprend des chansons et des compositions originales de même que des interprétations tantôt douces et tantôt incendiaires de pièces traditionnelles. A tel point qu’une personne disait à la blague qu’une mise en garde devrait apparaître sur la pochette de l’album indiquant que « L’écoute de CORBEAU au volant peut entraîner l’imposition de lourdes amendes pour excès de vitesse » !

Deux dates de lancement ont été annoncées pour l’IPÉ. D’abord le 31 mai de 17h à 20h au Bayou du Carrefour de l’Isle-Saint-Jean à Charlottetown, et le 1er juin de 20h à minuit au Old Triangle Alehouse de Charlottetown. Préalablement à ces lancements, TEN STRINGS AND A GOAT SKIN sera au Nouveau-Brunswick pour une tournée promotionnelle avec la brasserie Picaroons afin de souligner le lancement d’un nouveau produit : à cette occasion le groupe présentera six concerts, dont trois en première partie du groupe The Mahones.

Le lancement en Nouvelle-Écosse quant à lui aura lieu le 27 juin au Carleton de Halifax.

Avec un autre programme estival frénétique à l’horizon, comprenant des festivals un peu partout à travers les Maritimes, une tournée de 7 jours dans le Maine et le New Hampshire de même que les Travelling Goatskin Ceilidhs hebdomadaires du lundi soir à la salle communautaire de Milton et du mercredi soir au Garden

Theater de la PEI Preserve Company, les membres du groupe sont très excités face à tout ce qui les attend.

Fiddle-filled, foot-stomping Irish gatherings formed a regular part of life when Caleb and Rowen Gallant were barely old enough to hold instruments.

10 Strings and a Goat Skin like to mix things up, combining traditional Celtic and Acadian music with more contemporary sounds, like grunge, punk and rock. They say they’re looking for an audience that’s open to appreciating something a little different.

The brothers, who hail from the shore of Rustico, P.E.I., are two-thirds of 10 Strings and a Goat Skin, a Celtic and Acadian band that combines contemporary and traditional music.

“There are definitely people who think traditional music should remain traditional and that’s what they like,” Rowen said. “…(We appreciate) people who enjoy hearing something a little different sometimes.”

Along with their high school buddy, 18-year-old Jesse Periard, Caleb and Rowen’s spin on the music they grew up with comes from a few facets of modern music. The brothers – respectively aged 16 and 18 – like grunge, punk and rock, including bands like the White Stripes and Flogging Molly.

That’s the sound they aim for using an acoustic guitar, violin and a bodhran (a traditional Irish drum).

Following a week of showcases at this year’s ECMAs in Moncton and a nod for Roots Traditional Group Recording of the Year, buzz built around the trio. Earlier, the boys landed the 2012 Music PEI Award in the same category.

They released Tri, their first full-length recording in Feb. 2011 and plan to head back to this studio this winter.

Though none of the three are legal drinking age in any of the Maritime provinces, play
ing for older crowds at free pub nights is a common occurrence, they say.

“When you have an experienced audience in a pub or bar and they see three kids that shouldn’t legally be there, it’s almost easy to take them by surprise with our material.”
